Aiden Eylward

Biological Anthropologist · Tampa, Florida

Aiden studies the human skeleton and the methods used to record it, bringing together forensic anthropology and 3D documentation: laser scanning, photogrammetry and reflectance imaging of bone, burial sites and museum collections.

M.A. student in Applied Anthropology at the University of South Florida, forensic technician at IFAAS, and 3D specialist at the Institute for Digital Exploration.

LabForensic technician, IFAAS

Forensic anthropology

Lab research focuses on taphonomy, the processes that act on a body and its skeleton after death, with particular attention to decomposition and, above all, bone weathering: the cracking, flaking and surface breakdown that bone undergoes once it is exposed to the environment.

Reading weathering accurately helps forensic anthropologists judge how long remains have been exposed, and tell post-mortem damage apart from injuries that happened around the time of death.

FieldExcavation

Bioarchaeology & excavation

Fieldwork focuses on the excavation and recording of burials and archaeological sites, especially mortuary contexts.

Osteo3D

Osteological Scanning for Teaching, Education, and Outreach is an ongoing research project Aiden built as a collaboration between USF's Institute for Digital Exploration and the Florida Institute for Forensic Anthropology & Applied Science.

Osteo3D creates 3D models of skeletal material for teaching, education and outreach, so students and the public can study bone in detail without handling fragile originals.
